Change a WarnerMedia-billed subscription

If you subscribed at Max.com (or HBOMax.com), here's what you need to know about changing your WarnerMedia-billed subscription.

Third-party billing
If your subscription is billed through another company (e.g., an app store or TV provider), go to Manage a Max subscription.

Which plan do I have?
  1. In Max, do one of the following:
    • Phone, tablet, or computer: Choose your profile and then Subscription.
    • TV device: Choose the Settings icon cog (lower left) and then Subscription.
      (Only Adult profiles can manage subscriptions.)
  2. Find your current plan and optional add-ons. Explore Max plans.

To change your plan, go to How do I change my plan? To change your add-on, go to Add or remove the Extra Member Add-On.

When is my next billing date?

Your subscription automatically renews on your next billing date. Here's how to find your next billing date:

  1. In Max, do one of the following:
    • Phone, tablet, or computer: Choose your profile and then Subscription.
    • TV device: Choose the Settings icon cog (lower left) and then Subscription.
      (Only Adult profiles can manage subscriptions.)
  2. If your base subscription plan is billed through WarnerMedia, you'll find your upcoming payment date. Your base plan and the optional Extra Member Add-On are billed separately (likely on different dates).

If your subscription is billed through another provider, go to Manage a Max subscription.

How do I cancel?
Things to know
  • Your Max subscription automatically renews until you cancel it.
  • Deleting the Max app does not cancel your subscription.
  • Cancel your subscription at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid further charges.
  • Canceling your base subscription also cancels your add-ons.

To cancel your Max subscription:

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Phone or tablet: Go to max.com/subscription and sign in (if needed).
    • Computer: Go to max.com and sign in (if needed). Then, choose your profile and Subscription.
      (Only Adult profiles can manage subscriptions.)
  2. Choose Cancel Your Subscription.
    No cancel option? Find who you're billed through (top of screen) and go to Cancel Max.
  3. Confirm your cancellation and take note of your expiration date.

Once canceled, you'll get an email confirming your cancellation. You can continue streaming until your subscription expires at the end of your billing period. If you change your mind about canceling, you can go back to Subscription (Step 1 above) and choose Resume Your Subscription.

If you have the Extra Member Add-On, the add-on will be cancelled when your base plan expires and if you have remaining time on your Extra Member Add-On, you'll get a prorated refund for the remaining days on your add-on. Your extra member will lose access to Max when your plan expires.

How do I get a payment receipt?

Here's how to get your payment history:

  1. On your phone or computer, go to max.com and sign in (if needed).
  2. Choose your profile and then Subscription.
    (Only Adult profiles can manage subscriptions.)
  3. If your subscription is billed through us (WarnerMedia), choose Payment History.
  4. Choose the payment date to view your receipt.

If your subscription is billed through another provider, go to their Help Center or contact them for help.

If your subscription charge isn't what you expected, go to Unexpected subscription charge. If you would like an HBO Max payment receipt, please contact us (you'll need to provide payment details before we email you a receipt).

How do I change my payment method?
  1. Do one of the following:
    • Phone or tablet: Go to max.com/subscription and sign in (if needed).
    • Computer: Go to max.com and sign in (if needed). Then, choose your profile and Subscription.
      (Only Adult profiles can manage subscriptions.)
  2. Choose Update Your Payment Method.
    No update payment option? Find who you're billed through (top of screen) and go to Change your payment.
  3. Add your payment info and save your changes.
    Need help? Go to Can't change or add payment.

Your updated payment info will be used for your next base subscription and add-on charge.

Need help signing in? Go to Can't sign in.

Can't change or add a payment method?
Your payment method must:
  • Be issued by a US-based bank
  • Be one of these: American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, PayPal, or Visa
  • Support recurring online payments

Note Some prepaid cards don't support recurring payments.

Payment error? If you're getting a payment error, try the following:

Double-check your payment details

Make sure all of your payment details are correct (e.g. make sure what you're submitting matches what's on your card).

If you're using a credit or debit card, the ZIP Code and State must match the billing address for your card.

Use a different browser

Try the following:

  • Try using a different supported browser (Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Safari).
    -or-
  • Try using an incognito or private browser window. To do this, open a new incognito or private window, then sign in at max.com/subscription. Choose Update Payment Method. Enter your payment information and choose Save.
Try another device

Try using a computer instead of your phone or vice versa.

Try another payment method

If your current payment method isn't working, try using another payment method.

If the above solutions don't help, please contact your bank or financial institution to find out why the payment method might be failing.

How do I change my plan?
  1. Sign in to Max on your phone, tablet, or computer. Can't sign in?
  2. Choose your profile and then Subscription.
    (Only Adult profiles can manage subscriptions.)
  3. Choose Change Your Plan and sign in (if needed).
    No change plan option? Find who you're billed through (top of screen) and go to How do I change plans?
  4. Choose a subscription plan and billing period.

Once your subscription is updated, you'll get an email confirming the change.

Promotional offers
Any promotional offers or discounts that you may currently benefit from will not apply to your new plan and will end when your new plan takes effect.
When will my plan change take effect?

The effective date depends on the change:

  • If you change to a lower-priced plan, your plan change will happen on your next billing date.
  • If you change to a higher-priced plan, your plan change happens immediately. You'll be charged the price difference between plans (plus applicable taxes) and your next billing date will be adjusted.
  • If you only change your billing period (monthly or yearly), your change will happen on your next billing date.

Note If you change from a higher-priced monthly plan to a lower-priced plan with a yearly billing period, your plan change will happen on your next billing date.

'Plan change unavailable' message

If you get this message, try the following:

  • To change your plan, you need to be located in the country where you started your subscription. If you're traveling, wait until you return home to change your subscription plan.
  • Try changing your plan again in a few minutes.

Can I cancel a plan change?

If the change isn't effective immediately, you can cancel your pending plan change. To do this, go back to Subscription (Step 2 above) and choose Cancel Pending Plan. You can also sign in at max.com/subscription and choose Cancel Pending Plan.

How do I add or remove the Extra Member Add-On?
  1. Go to max.com/subscription and sign in (if needed). Can't sign in?
  2. Choose Get Add-Ons or Remove Add-On.
    No Add-On options? The Extra Member Add-On is only available to Max subscribers billed through WarnerMedia (excluding Disney+, Hulu, Max Bundle subscribers).
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add or remove the add-on.

Once your subscription is updated, you'll get an email confirming the change.

When you add the Extra Member Add-On, you'll be billed each month until you remove the add-on or cancel your base plan. The monthly Extra Member Add-On charge is separate from your base subscription charge.

If you remove the Extra Member Add-On, your extra member can continue streaming until the end of your current billing period. Your base plan is not affected.
